We met three Argentinian girls on a beach in Mexico. They beat us at football, comfortably.
It was a chance to brush up on my rusty Spanish skills, translating the abuse they were hurling towards us as they pinged the ball around effortlessly in the sand.
Sometimes I questioned why I chose to study Spanish at school — but now I’m very grateful I did.
The penny dropped as I sat in the taxi on the way back to the hostel, with my legs in tatters and covered in gritty sand.
I was so happy.
Learning Spanish had enabled me to experience that beautiful moment, along with countless others — I just hadn’t appreciated them as much.
It was my gateway to ‘conocer la vida’.
Every learner I speak to seems to share this mutual adoration for the language. It sparks something within them, a lust for life, that otherwise lies dormant.
So if you’ve learnt Spanish, lucky you. It’s worth all the effort required to master it — for the experiences alone.
That’s why I started the Chat Spanish Podcast.
Selfishly, to keep this passion for life burning inside of me.
Selflessly, to share it with anyone who cares to listen.
Saludos,
Harry
